Developmental Disabilities

Developmental Disabilities are conditions of deficient or delayed cognitive, educational, speech, or sensory-motor abilities which are generally detected in infancy. Our child and adult evaluations are conducted by or under the supervision of licensed psychologists. DCMHS also provides treatment for developmentally disabled pre-schoolers as well as Work Activity programs for developmentally disabled adults. The classroom based pre-school program, known as Delta House, offers early intervention to delayed and disabled children and their families. This program is located in the Greenville office. Home teachers are assigned to some children who cannot attend the school where the home based teacher will typically work with the child and parents 1-2 hours per week. Home based instruction is available in Cleveland and Greenville. Our pre-school programs provide individualized developmental training in the areas of auditory discrimination, speech and language, motor skills, and pre-academics. With this early intervention, many of our pre-schoolers go on to graduate into regular Kindergarten classes in the local school system. Their Delta House teachers always work to make this a smooth transition.

The adult Work Activity programs are designed along a "sheltered work environment" model, where consumers spend five days a week in the work activity center, known as Delta Industries. This program is available in Greenville and Cleveland; emphasis is on training in pre-vocational and vocational skills through sub-contract work from local industries and businesses. Training is also provided in the areas of home management, personal-social skills, academics, and community/home leisure time management.

Also in Greenville is Robertson Center. Robertson Center provides 24-hour residential care in a group home environment for persons with mild to moderate mental retardation. Training is provided in every facet of maintaining a house or apartment and residents are given an opportunity to be come more independent and self sufficient.
